What would make PhraseCalc more useful to you? The most helpful ideas say what you were trying to work out, and the line you wished you could type.

PhraseCalc 1.0

The first release, on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Everything below is built and in testing.

Writing and calculating

  • Every line of a note gets its answer on the right, updated as you type.
  • Plain words or symbols: 8 times 9, 100 / 3, (12 + 8) × 3; k and million for big numbers.
  • Labels (Coffee: 3.50 × 5), # headings and // notes that aren’t calculated.
  • Totals: sum and average of the lines above, and prev for the line before.
  • Variables: rate = 85, then use rate anywhere. Rename it where it’s set and every use follows.

Percentages

  • Twelve natural forms: 20% off, + 20%, 15% of 86, 25 is what % of 200, 75 is what % more than 60, 20% off what is 1000 and more.

Units

  • Length, area, volume, weight, temperature, angles, data, time and CSS units (px, em, rem).
  • SI and IEC prefixes (km, MB, GiB), and mixed units on one line (1 m + 20 cm).

Currencies

  • Over 150 currencies by code, symbol or name, with live exchange rates.
  • Works offline with the last rates downloaded, and you can set your own rates.

Dates and time zones

  • days until Dec 25, weeks since Jan 1, today + 90 days, 3 weeks ago, ages.
  • The time in any city or country, and meeting times: 3pm Tokyo in London, 9am New York in my time.

Functions and formats

  • sqrt, round, factorials and more; hex, binary and scientific notation.

iPhone and iPad

  • Notes list with search and sorting; notes are plain text files.
  • Quick-entry bar above the keyboard: + − × ÷ %, parentheses, =, in, your currency, sum, prev.
  • Tap an answer or a name to copy it; a one-tap paste button appears on the bar.
  • Copy with answers, print and share; import and export .txt.
  • A built-in Guide with examples.

Mac

  • A menu-bar app, opened from anywhere with a shortcut you choose.
  • Pin the window above other apps.
  • Keyboard shortcuts for copying answers, import, export and print.

Make it yours

  • 10 themes, light and dark, plus your own colour for each part of the syntax.
  • Text size and three line spacings.
  • Your number format, decimal places, and date and time formats.
